Creative Coffee Photography

Recently my friend asked me to take photos for his new coffee product, Akezza Trade. It’s coffee made of Arabica beans from Rwanda, roasted and packed in Finland. My task was to take photos for website and social media. I didn’t have a proper studio in my use that time so first I tried to shoot those coffee bags in my kitchen. Lighting turned out gloomy there so I had to come up with another place to shoot.

I really enjoy natural light and tried different options close to my window. It didn’t really work out so I dragged my kitchen table to the balcony. The lighting was definitely better there when I could get a glance of sunlight. It was cold outside so I put my jacket on and started to design background for the product. Light grey and white backgrounds worked out well for the brown coffee bag but the white bag seemed to blend in with the wall. I had to think of some other background. After some time, I taped my scarf in the wall. Here’s couple of behind the scenes photos of that.

After getting the background on point I started to think of some props for the photos. I used coffee beans, ground coffee and filter paper in the foreground and around the bags. Well, what else could fit for coffee photos?

I really enjoy product photography when you can be creative with building the background and surroundings for the product. If you don’t have a studio to shoot with probably you have even more options to be creative. Lighting and background might be challenges at first but those can be overcome with good ideas and open mind. Here are couple of photos I was most happy with.

Oh by the way, Akezza coffee can be found in K-market Rakuuna in Lappeenranta. Hopefully soon you can get it also elsewhere.
