Sunrise and Sunset
I was visiting my family one weekend. It was Sunday and my dad had birthday. Also it was -25 degrees outside and we had plans to visit Koli national park that day. I was sleeping long and feeling comfortable under my warm blanket. “The weather is nice and the sun is rising now. We could get good photos”, my dad said and I jumped out of bed immediately. We boiled water and run outside to try the boiling water trick. So you basically throw boiling water into air and it freezes into snow because of the big difference in temperature. I had tried it once last year with my friend but had to give it a second chance. We throw water about five times until I could get one shot that I was happy with. Here it is, taken at the skiing tracks nearby our house.
After the morning photoshoot with boiling water and sunrise, we started our trip to Koli. I had been there many times before, mostly in summer but also for downhill skiing in winter. Yet it had been many years since I was there last time. It was freezing cold so we had to dress ourselves up with tons of winter clothes. We ate lunch on the way and realized the sun is going to go down soon. So we hurried up to the hill first by car and then by a lift. The stairs were under snow this time of the year so we had to take another path to walk up.
On our way up we went to Akka-Koli which is a hill on the other side. We saw the setting sun and rushed our way up higher to Ukko-Koli. From there we saw the moon on the other side above the lake and sunset on the other. The view was breathtaking. I didn’t remember it’s so beautiful here. The weather was perfectly clear though it was really cold. But that didn’t bother us since we saw the view.
It’s funny how we always want to travel far to see something beautiful. But sometimes the best places are found closer to our home. Koli was only one hour drive from my parent’s place. Only one hour and we could feel like we are in Lapland or somewhere really north. On that day we saw both the sunrise and sunset, had good luck with the clear weather and didn’t get too much bothered by the cold. It was totally worth it.
